Synopsis

They are the next link in the evolutionary chain. Each was born with a unique genetic mutation, which at puberty manifested itself in extraordinary powers. In a world increasingly filled with hatred and prejudice, they are scientific oddities - freaks of nature - outcasts who are feared and loathed by those who cannot accept their differences. Yet despite society's pervasive ignorance, the X-Men and thousands of mutants across the globe survive.

Under the tutelage of Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), the world's most powerful telepath, these 'gifted' students have learned to control and direct their respective powers for the greater good of mankind. They fight to protect a world that fears them.

When new teleporting mutant Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) appears inside The White House and attempts to assassinate the President, the X-Men's world is thrown into danger! Rebel baddie Stryker (Brian Cox) is behind it and plots an elaborate plan to capture all mutants including the pupils at Professor Xavier's (Patrick Stewart) School for the 'Gifted'. It is then up to the indestructible Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to discover the truth about what is going on and in the process, the story behind his own identity.

Meanwhile the villainous Magneto (Ian McKellen) breaks free from prison with the help of his shape-shifting comrade Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), creating more cataclysmic events for the X-MEN. As danger beckons the mutants call upon their powers to an even greater extent...

Dr Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) reaches extraordinary new levels using her powers of telepathy alongside weather-manipulator Storm (Winner Halle Berry) life-force zapper Rogue (Anna Paquin), laser beam Cyclops (James Marsden) and the cool Ice-Man (Shawn Ashmore). Newcomers include the iron claw clad Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu) and fingertip fire-starter Pyro (Aaron Stanford)

X2 reunites the principal cast members of X-MEN, which theatrically has grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, was a video and DVD phenomenon, and pioneered the current wave of comics to film adaptations. Also returning is the original's key creative team, including director Bryan Singer. X2 will feature several surprises, including favourite mutant characters from the vast X-Men comics' universe, who are new to the film franchise.
