Synopsis

Written and directed by Gianni Amelio THE WAY WE LAUGHED is the story of a young, illiterate man called Giovanni (Enrico Lo Verso) who moves from Sicily to Turin in the late 1950's to be near his younger brother Pietro (Francesco Giuffrida), who's being educated there. Giovanni makes sacrifices for his brother Pietro to give him as good an education as possible but is unaware that Pietro isn't doing as well as he thinks. As time goes on Giovanni starts a business initiative letting substandard housing to other immigrants and his business pursuits expand in tandem with the country's, so when Italy enters the 1960's where corruption and exploitation become increasingly prevalent, Giovanni's business interests reflect this.
