Synopsis

Taking place in Cherbourg, France at the time of the Algerian War, THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG stars a young Catherine Deneuve as 17-year-old Genevieve Emery. Working as a shop assistant she lives with her widowed mother (Anne Vernon) who owns an umbrella shop. Unfortunately her mother disapproves of her boyfriend, Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), a car mechanic and feels she is too young too marry. Catherine falls pregnant by Guy but he has to go into the army and hearing little from him she marries Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), a wealthy jeweller who idolises her and it will give her baby a father.

Masterfully directed by Jacques Demy, the musical is brought to life by Michel Legrand's powerful score. Re-released on a new print.
