Synopsis

Could terrorists actually detonate a weapon of mass destruction on United States soil? According to the CIA at least 20 countries, nearly half of them, in the middle East and South Asia, already have or may be developing weapons of mass destruction. Moreover, it is a matter of public record that there were tens of thousands of them constructed and waiting on launching pads during the Cold War. To this day, according to a published report, 164 transportable warheads are still unaccounted for.

Starring Ben Affleck as CIA Analyst Jack Ryan and Morgan Freeman as CIA Director William Cabot, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS is a chillingly realistic portrait of what could happen if one of those weapons fell into the wrong hands and sees Jack Ryan hot on the trail of a group of European neo-Nazi terrorists who are in possession of a nuclear device and have devised a plan to release it at the Super Bowl. With the intention of incriminating Russia, the terrorists' motives are focussed on restarting the Cold War. Eerily prescient in the current political climate, the film is a frightening depiction of how quickly fear can escalate into a paranoia that dominates man's ability to reason.

Published in August 1991, Tom Clancy's THE SUM OF ALL FEARS was a best seller and has currently sold over six million copies. It's the fourth of Clancy's best-selling novels to be brought to the screen by producer Mace Neufeld, who also produced the global hits: HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, PATRIOT GAMES and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER.
