Synopsis

Marcia, a frumpy lingerie salesgirl from Buenos Aires, who lives a life of dreary routine alone after having been dumped by her boyfriend, dreams rather forlornly of finding romance. This comes calling in an utterly unexpected fashion when a pair of feisty leather-jacketed, crop-haired lesbian punks, Lenine and Mao, accost her on the street. The capricious Mao declares her love for the half-horrified, half-fascinated girl and kidnaps her at knifepoint. Hijacking a taxi, they head off for the coast to visit Lenin's eccentric Aunt Blanca, who shares her house with the hapless Felipe and uptight Delia.

The oddball group develops a strong bond, but nobody behaves as you would expect them to. Liaisons form and break up, then regroup and settle down as personalities reveal themselves in surprising ways.

Based on a story by Cesar Aira, SUDDENLY is a quirky, bittersweet comedy that's reminiscent of Jim Jarmusch's STRANGER THAN PARADISE. First-time director Diego Lerman emerges as one of the rising talents of new Argentinean cinema, winning an impressive collection of awards at various international festivals.
