Synopsis

Forced from their home by Germany's occupation of France in 1940 during World War II, young mother Odile (Emmanuelle Beart), recently widowed, escapes Paris with her two children, 13 year-old Philippe (Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet) and seven year-old Cathy (Clemence Meyer).

Part of a convoy of fleeing refugees, the road comes under attack from a German bomber. Odile's car is destroyed, and the family is forced to run for their lives into the surrounding fields. Lost in the forest Odile falls under the protection of a wild child, Yvan (Gaspard Ulliel).

Unpredictable, but skilled in the art of survival, Yvan leads them to an abandoned summerhouse. Feeding Oldie and the children on stolen chickens and trapped rabbits, the abandoned house becomes a safe haven for this makeshift family where they are forced to re-learn certain rules of domesticity and propriety. But their bond of trust is tenuous; Ivan is a stranger with an uncertain past and too used to fending for himself.

Despite her misgivings Odile is forced to trust Yvan as the family become more dependant on him. They settle into their domestic routines in the house where time and reality are suspended. It is only with the arrival of two suspicious strangers that forces Odile to question where her loyalties actually lie.
