Synopsis
A family - the parents are Giovanni and Paola and their two teenage children are Irene, the daughter, and Andrea, the younger son - are living together in a small Northern Italian city.
Giovanni is a psychoanalyst and with his office located next to the family's apartment, his patients confide in him a long list of their own worries and neuroses, in contrast to the calm of his own existence. Giovanni's life is regulated by a familiar pattern of interests and routines: reading, listening to music, spending time alone and wearing himself out on long walks exploring the city.
One Sunday morning, Giovanni suggests that he and his son enjoy a run together, but he is urgently called away to see a patient. He can't go running with his son and Andrea leaves to go diving with friends. This leads to an event that changes the family's lives forever.
