Synopsis

James Neubauer (Trevor Morgan) is going through a difficult period is his life. Having lost his mother two years ago in a car accident, he is now having to get used to his stepmother, Mary (Catherine McCormack), and resents her intrusion in his life. He's not seeing eye to eye with his father, Nathan (Ray Liotta), either who's always away on business. So now he finds himself on holiday on the coast of Maine staying with his uncle, Charlie (Ron Livingston), and his stepmother during the summer.

At least he can get out of the house by exploring on his bike but comes a cropper when he crashes through a neighbor's fence. Not just any neighbor but the local eccentric Maddy Bennett (Vanessa Redgrave), who isn't about to let him off lightly and makes him repair the damage he's caused. This meeting starts off an unlikely relationship between the two when they discover a common bond of having both lost people close to them and it helps them both rebuild their lives.
