Synopsis
Following the success of THE 10TH DISTRICT COURT: MOMENTS OF TRIAL, the ICA presents a second documentary feature by celebrated Magnum photographer and prolific documentarian, Raymond Depardon. PROFILS PAYSANS: LE QUOTIDIEN, opens at the ICA on Friday 28 July, alongside a selection of Raymond Depardon's other films.
The rural districts of Lozere, Ardeche and Haute-Loire, located among the low-lying mountains at the center of France, are traditionally known for agriculture. Today however, spurred by the establishment of the European Union, the region's family farms are increasingly being converted into luxury country homes, while the country's agricultural industry has largely been monopolized by large conglomerates. The new young farmers who wish to settle down in these areas are continuously confronted by bureaucratic and financial hardships.
In PROFILS PAYSAN: LE QUOTIDIEN, Raymond Depardon pays tribute to the farming men and women who in the face of changing times persist in maintaining a way of life that would otherwise be forgotten.
Raymond Depardon is one of France's most celebrated photographers. PROFILS PAYSANS: LE QUOTIDIEN, is the second part of a trilogy of films Depardon has made about agricultural life in rural France. The first part, PROFILS PAYSANS: L'APPROCHE, was made in 2001.
