Synopsis

Based on the classic novel by Somerset Maugham, THE PAINTED VEIL is set in the 1920s and a love story unfolds between a young English couple - Walter Fane (Edward Norton), a middle class doctor and Kitty (Naomi Watts), an upper-class woman.

They get married for the wrong reasons and move to Shanghai, China. Socialising with other British colonial residents they meet English Vice Consul Charles Townsend (Liev Schreiber) and Kitty soon falls in love with him. When Walter discovers Kitty's infidelity, he retaliates by accepting a job in a remote village in China that has succumbed to a deadly cholera epidemic, and forces her to accompany him.

Their journey brings meaning to their relationship and gives them purpose in one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth. Confronted by the devastating loss of life the epidemic is causing, Kitty and Walter discover forgiveness, understanding, even tenderness - and rediscover each other.
