Synopsis

Deciding on adoption, Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to look into adoption visit the local orphanage and meet a young girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) who quietly paints on her own apart from the other kids busily enjoying a party. "I guess I'm different," she tells them.

However, soon after Esther comes to their home, an alarming series of events take place, and Kate begins to suspect that there's something wrong with Esther. Concerned for her family's safety, Kate tries to get John to see past Esther's sweet façade. But even Kate can't guess at Esther's secret and her warnings go unheeded until it may be too late... for everyone.
