Synopsis
Adapted from the 19th century Portuguese novel by Camilo Castelo Branco, which evokes the complex intertwined narratives of Victor Hugo and Charles Dickens. Directed by Raul Ruiz, the story centres on Joao, the illegitimate child of an ill-fated romance between two members of the aristocracy who are forbidden to marry, and his subsequent quest to discover the truth of his parentage.
But this is just the start of an epic tale that follows a host of characters whose fates intertwine then separate and later rejoin spanning three decades in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy.
