Synopsis

Germain Chazes (Gerard Depardieu) is in his mid 50s and lives a quiet life with his girlfriend Annette (Sophie Guillemin). He can often be found at the local bar, in the park counting the pigeons or in the vegetable garden, where he grows produce to take to market. Germain's father left his mother when she fell pregnant and she remains bitter about the whole affair, which has left her unfairly hostile towards Germain. At school, Germain never learned to read adequately and was frequently the butt of his teacher's jokes.

One day, in the park, he meets Margueritte (Gisele Casadesus), an old lady whose work took her all over the world and who shares her love of books with Germain. Soon, a true bond of affection unites them, and Germain realizes that he has the right to take control of his destiny...
