Synopsis
An exuberant family drama set in Mira Nair's beloved Punjabi culture, where ancient tradition and dot-com modernity combine in unique and perfect harmony.
As the romantic monsoon rains loom, the extended Verma family reunites from around the globe for a last-minute arranged marriage in New Delhi. MONSOON WEDDING traces five intersecting stories, each navigating different aspects of love as they cross boundaries of class, continent and morality.
The bride Adit, is on the rebound from a previous love affair and agrees to marry Hemant, an engineer from Texas. Meanwhile P.K Dubey, a loveable wheeler-dealer is frantically organising their elaborate last minute wedding and falling hopelessly in love with the family's maid, Alice. Both Alice and P.K Dubey share the bizarre habit of eating marigolds.
Ayesha, a cousin of the bride and Rahul, a sophomore at the University of Sydney also fall for each other in a tale of teenage unconsummated love. Ria is another cousin of the bride and as she watches Aditi plunge recklessly into marriage a disturbing secret she has suppressed for years comes to the surface.
The film celebrates a contemporary India never before seen on screen and was winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival 2001.
