Synopsis

Cartoonist Stu Miley (Brendan Fraser) has created a hit comic strip featuring Monkeybone (John Turturro), a petulant rascal, and his comic strip is about to be aired on national TV. Stu, who's in love with his girlfriend Julie (Bridget Fonda), is struck down in a freak accident on the night he'd planned to propose to her.

Lying in hospital in a coma with Julie at his bedside, Stu's conscious spirit is transported to 'Downtown', a purgatory-like limbo existing between life and death populated by mythical gods and creatures who revel in the nightmares of the living.

Stu must fight to return to the world of the living and outwit Death (Whoopi Goldberg) and Monkeybone, who suddenly enters his unconscious world and has a plan of his own that may hinder Stu. Will he win his life back before the doctors decide otherwise?

Rude, crude and packed with ghoulish slapstick, this cartoon-reality crossover is a visually stunning journey of the imagination. Superb animation and special effects, combined with uniformly outstanding performances, mean this is one roller-coaster ride not to be missed.
