Synopsis

A beautifully paced, symbolic feature dealing with the legacy of violence and rehabilitation, THE MILK OF SORROW won the prestigious Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival.

Set in Peru, the story focuses on a young woman who must deal with the death of her mother and the troubled history of her country. With this her second feature, Peruvian Claudia Llosa affirms her position as one of the most interesting female directors working and an urgent voice in Latin American cinema.

As a consequence of Peru's war on terrorism, Fausta's (Magaly Solier) relatives believe she suffers from The Milk of Sorrow, a condition transmitted by her mother, who was violated and mistreated during the country's turmoil. Despite the end of the war, Fausta is constantly reminded of her condition and lives in fear of it. When her mother suddenly dies this forces Fausta to confront her fears and question the peculiar measures her mother took to protect her daughter from a similar fate.

THE MILK OF SORROW is the story of a search for re-awakening and a journey from fear to freedom.
