Synopsis

From the acclaimed director of ORPHANS, THE MAGDALENE SISTERS is a powerful and emotional journey, charting several years in the young lives of four 'fallen women' who find themselves incarcerated by the Catholic church, to work in their laundry business.

Set in 1964, THE MAGDALENE SISTERS is based on true accounts of the Magdalene laundries in Ireland, which eventually closed in 1996 after an estimated 30,000 women had been detained.

The film stars Geraldine McEwan (LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, ROBIN HOOD PRINCE OF THIEVES) as Sister Bridget, Anne Marie Duff (ENIGMA, MILD AND BITTER) as Margaret, Eileen Walsh (NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, JANICE BEARD 45WPM) as Crispina, Dorothy Duffy (THE LOVES OF CASS MCGUIRE) as Rose and marks the acting debut of Nora Jane Noone as Bernadette.
