Synopsis

The world's youngest hero springs onto British cinema screens this summer. Introducing a new children's champion, KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS is a magical treat for the school holidays.

In 2002 KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS was joint winner (with CHICKEN RUN) of the British Animation Award for best European animated feature. Showing how tiny but brave Kirikou outwits a powerful sorceress, this enchanting adventure was inspired by the folk stories of Senegal. Writer/director Michel Ocelot's fresh vision of Africa is a world away from Disney's singing lions.

A soundtrack by internationally renowned musician Youssou N'Dour gives an authentic pulse to what he calls "the mythical Africa of children's tales". KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS, the only film that has attracted his talents, uses exclusively traditional instruments and includes a catchy song celebrating Kirikou's daring triumphs.

A tale of innocence defeating evil, KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS has a modern twist. Glittering with stolen gold and exuding malevolence, Karaba has eaten the menfolk of a small tribe. No-one seems able to stop her until a remarkable baby is born in the village. Encouraged by his grandfather, an African Gandalf, Kirikou disarms the sorceress by discovering the cause of her own pain.

KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS is a picture book in motion, with beautiful images taken from the art and nature of West Africa. From emerald jungles to the glowing hellfire of Karaba's lair, Kirikou's world is a kaleidoscope of joyous colour. While children cheer Kirikou's cheeky courage, adults who go with them on this playful journey will find much to enjoy in a story of forgiveness and second chances.
