Synopsis
Set a 1000 years in the future IDIOCRACY is a science fiction drama surrounding the creation of a Human Hibernation Project and the participants selected to take part in this experiment. Instigated by the Pentagon as a means for the military to preserve their best and most highly trained and skilled personnel during peace times, Private Joe Bowers (Luke Wilson) - the most typically average American they can find - is one of the chosen test subjects for this top secret program. Another is Rita (Maya Rudolph) - a prostitute!
Initially trialled for a twelve-month duration in this preliminary stage the project falls by the wayside when the officer in charge and one of the few who knew about it is arrested on criminal charges. In the backlash and recriminations that follow the base where the project is sited is abandoned. Closed and forgotten the test subjects remain in hibernation.
Eventually awakening way in the future Joe now finds himself in an unrecognizable society where his intelligence easily outsmarts the present population. Costco is bigger than a large city, buildings are duct-taped together, crops are being watered with a sports energy drink, and every Starbucks order comes with a hand-job! Stupid people have outbred intelligent people and the world is (barely) run by morons.
To his shock, Joe soon learns he is now the smartest man alive and is recruited by the White House to solve all of the nation's problems. Unwilling to take on the responsibility, Joe looks for a way back home, far away from a society that has difficulty deciding whether he is a possible saviour or potential threat.
