Synopsis

Emma (Tilda Swinton) is the matriarch of a wealthy Milanese family, the Recchi family, whose lives are being affected by far-reaching changes within the family. Emma lives in a carefully ordered world where her duty towards husband, Tancredi (Pippo Delbono), and children dominates. Eduardo Sr (Gabriele Ferzetti), the family patriarch, has made the decision to name a successor to the reigns of his massive industrial company and surprises everyone by dividing the power between his son Tancredi and grandson Edo (Flavio Parenti). But Edo dreams of opening a restaurant with his friend Antonio Biscaglia (Edoardo Gabbriellini) - a handsome and talented chef.

With her daughter Elisabetta 'Betta' (Alba Rohrwacher) away studying in England, Emma is becoming lonely and isolated as her children are all becoming independent. When her daughter returns home she confides in her mother that she has a girlfriend. Later travelling to meet Betta in Nice where her daughter has an exhibition, Emma has a chance encounter with Antonio that ignites long repressed passions and sets her on a journey of sexual awakening. This passionate love affair will ultimately change her family forever.
