Synopsis
From filmmaker Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company (producers of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR) comes THE HITCHER, an update of the 1986 film of the same name.
Dave Meyers makes his feature directorial debut on the new thriller, which tracks the terrifying trajectory of Grace Andrews (Sophia Bush) and Jim Halsey (Zachary Knighton), a collegiate couple who are tormented by the mysterious hitchhiker John Ryder, aka The Hitcher (Sean Bean).
The young couple hit the road in a 1970 Oldsmobile 442, en route to spring break. But their pleasure trip soon turns into a waking nightmare.
In the midst of a torrential rainstorm Grace and Jim come across a man standing in the middle of the road, his car apparently broken down. They decide not to help, but further down the road they stop at a service station and find themselves come face to face with the same man (John Ryder). He asks the unsuspecting couple for a lift to a local motel and they reluctantly oblige, but soon realise he wants more than just a lift...he wants their lives.
From the moment Ryder sits in their car he drops his friendly façade and reveals the psychotic killer beneath. With no explanation of his background or how he became a murderous maniac, Ryder seems driven by an unknown force to kill and maim at will and the unsuspecting couple are his next prey.
As this deadly game of cat and mouse continues, the nomadic New Mexico scenery plays backdrop to this apocalyptic battleground of blood and metal. As the death toll rises Ryder frames the couple as murderers and soon they find themselves on the run from the law as State Police Lieutenant Esteridge's (Neal McDonough) officers try and bring them to justice.
The open road becomes a suspenseful, action-packed battleground of blood and metal as, in trying to elude not only Ryder but also New Mexico State Police Lieutenant Esteridge's (Neal McDonough) officers, Grace and Jim must fight for their lives and face their fears head-on.
