Synopsis
Michael Haneke returns with his fourth French language film, HIDDEN, which follows THE PIANO TEACHER, CODE UNKNOWN and TIME OF THE WOLF. It was by general consensus the most impressive film in Cannes 2005.
HIDDEN is an intense, unsettling tale that lays bare the soul of a family, exploring the themes of guilt, trust, responsibility and paranoia. It is a story of a comfortable, middle class family life that is suddenly turned upside down.
Georges (Auteuil), who hosts a popular TV literary review show and his wife Anne (Binoche) who works in the publishing business, begin to receive packages containing videos of themselves and their son Pierrot - shot secretly from the street - and alarming drawings whose meaning is obscure.
At first, Georges has no idea who may be sending them. Gradually, the footage on the tapes becomes more personal, suggesting that the sender has known Georges for some time and Georges too comes to believe that he knows the perpetrator. Georges feels a sense of menace hanging over him and his family but, as no direct threat has been made, the police refuse to help...
Curiously and tellingly he refuses to share this knowledge with his wife, indeed he even tries to hide it. As the film progresses, the family's personal drama begins almost imperceptibly to turn in a different direction.
