Synopsis

Spain 1792

The Revolution is sweeping through France. Meanwhile in Spain the Catholic Church, which has an iron clad grip on rule, reverts back to the Inquisition to restore order under the power seeking leadership of a cruel priest, Brother Lorenzo (Javier Bardem).

Francisco Goya (Stellan Skarsgård), the famous artist to the Spanish royalty, is dragged into the conflict when Lorenzo vindictively imprisons his beautiful model Ines (Natalie Portman). Pleading with Lorenzo to spare her life, Lorenzo tortures and rapes her, leaving her to die in a dungeon.

20 years later the French forces invade Spain and Lorenzo now ex-communicated by the Church flees to France joining Napoleon's regime to exact revenge on his once Spanish Inquisition allies.

Meanwhile Goya is a changed man and a ghost of his former self but is still an artistic genius. As France liberates the prisoners, Ines is released and meets up with the changed Goya only to reveal that she had a daughter, Alicia while in prison. Alicia's existence causes mayhem. Against the backdrop of continuous political turmoil in Europe, Goya discovers Alicia working as a Madrid prostitute and attempts to reunite Ines with her long lost daughter, while Lorenzo is intent on her existence remaining a secret...
