Synopsis
Two hours off the shore of Miami beach, nestled next to the Dominican Republic, lies Haiti - a country of poverty and despair and violence. To those who have never stepped foot there, 'hell' is the only word that can truly convey the condition of life in this small country that is largely ignored by the rest of the world. This is the home of the GHOSTS OF CITe SOLEIL.
GHOSTS OF CITe SOLEIL is the true story of the armed young men trapped in the ghetto world of the city's slums, and their desperate hope for survival in this violent and dangerous world. In the midst of political unrest two young brothers, leaders of a renowned gang, are used as political pawns on the streets of Cite Soleil in a violent battle which they can surely never win.
As the grim reality of their day-to-day world threatens loyalties and takes lives, hip-hop and rap music become an existential part of the brother's world - and the focus of their dreams of escape.
GHOSTS OF CITE SOLEIL, the powerful and shocking documentary by Dutch filmmaker Asger Leth, is based in Haiti in 2004 under the rule of president Bertrand Aristride. The documentary follows two brothers 2Pac and Billy, renowned Haitian gang leader, who are used on the streets as political pawns in a violent battle and struggle for power.
The film will take you into the minds of the brothers as they strive to make better choices in a world of no choices at all. You will be shown the rawness and violence which prevails in the streets of Haiti, as well as the underworld of violent gangs and rivaling siblings.
With music by Wyclef Jean and Jerry 'Wonda' Duplessi, Wyclef Jean also features in the film.
