Synopsis
What if you could live forever?
THE FOUNTAIN is an odyssey about one man's eternal struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th century Spain, where conquistador Tomas (Hugh Jackman) commences his search for the Fountain of Youth, the legendary entity believed to grant immortality. As modern day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife, Isabel (Rachel Weisz). Traveling through deep space as a 26th century astronaut, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries that have consumed him for a millennium. The three stories converge into one truth, as the Thomas of all periods—warrior, scientist, and explorer—comes to terms with life, love, death and rebirth.
From the director
In the spring of 1999, I was getting antsy. REQUIEM was finished and waiting for release. I was already anxious to get back to the typewriter. The 21st century was inching closer and closer and I started to wonder what sci-fi would be like now that we were the future. The immortality of my 20's was retreating into the past and the stories surrounding the quest for the Fountain of Youth began to bubble up in my brain. Suddenly, life eternal started to have holes in it as people I loved were dealing with real issues of life, death and love. Innocently, I began to write about what I was feeling and experiencing. Little did I know then, that my team and I would spend most of our 30's battling Hollywood to get THE FOUNTAIN made. The hurdles were endless. Many times they shattered our will and shook our souls. But we have no regrets. I do believe that the entire experience - all the pain, all the struggle, all the passion we felt - somehow made it into the final print. We only hope you enjoy it as much as we have all enjoyed the suffering and bliss of making it. - Darren Aronofsky
