Synopsis

Action epic FOR GREATER GLORY sees an impassioned group of men and women fight for their freedom. They each decide to risk it all - for their families, faith and the very future of their country. The film explores the long-hidden, true story of the 1920s Cristero War - a revolt by Mexican citizens against their government that rocked 20th century North America.

General Gorostieta (Andy Garcia), a retired military man, initially thinks he has nothing personal at stake as he and his wife (Eva Longoria) watch Mexico fall into a violent civil war. However, he will become the resistance's most inspiring and self-sacrificing leader, as he begins to see the cost of religious persecution on his countrymen. Using his military expertise, he transforms a disorganised and untrained band of rebels into a heroic force to be reckoned with against a powerful and ruthless government.

Set in the 1920's, the Cristero War (aka the Cristiada) from 1926-29 was a rebellion against the ruling Mexican government. The Mexican forces and government were seeking to destroy superstition and fanaticism and embarked on a campaign of persecution of religion in this predominantly Roman Catholic country.
