Synopsis

Michael Taylor (Ryan Reynolds) is deep in thought as he travels back to attend a family celebration in his Midwestern hometown. He dwells on the realities of his adult life - a teetering marriage and a less than lofty, if prolific, career as a romance novelist. He reminisces on the decades-old memories of heated conflict with his domineering father (Willem Dafoe).

However when Michael arrives home he is met with an entirely different scenario. Journeying from the airport with his younger sister Ryne (Shannon Lucio) they struggle to connect during the drive and then face to face with the scene of a car accident that has taken the life of their mother, Lisa (Julia Roberts) in the prime of her life. Funeral plans replace the graduation celebration, and as he mourns his mother, Michael must come to grips with his fractured relationship with his father.
