Synopsis

Adapted from the broadway stage musical, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF was nominated for 8 Academy Awards. Tevye (Topol), husband to Golde (Norma Crane) and father of five daughters, is a poor Ukrainian Jewish milkman living in the small Russian town of Anatevka in 1916. He is a firm believer in traditions but has to break some of them to adapt to small changes in the world around him. Three of Tevye's five daughters are of marrying age and, as the father and head of the family, it is Tevye's right to approve the selection of their husbands. However he is not prepared to just marry them off as he wants them to be happy. This becomes a test of love versus tradition when one after the other, in a progressively rebellious manner, each daughter expresses an interest in a man that Tevye does not consider husband material. Just to add to his problems the ruling Russian government's anti-Semitism threatens to drive him from his home.
