Philippe (Bobby Henrey), a diplomat's son is often on his own when his parents are away except for his butler Baines (Ralph Richardson) and housekeeper Mrs Baines (Sonia Dresdel). He unwittingly becomes embroiled in Baines secret affair with his mistress Julie (Michele Morgan). Then when Baines is suspected of murdering his wife, Philippe finds himself in an impossible situation as he is drawn into a complex world of adult deceptions.
