Synopsis

Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is an electronic surveillance man proud of his expertise, independence, reputation and extremely secretive about his methods and privacy. What starts out as a routine job his hired to do suddenly changes course.

Hired by a husband to spy on his wife who he suspects is having an affair, Harry tapes some incriminating evidence and takes it to his client's office. However he soon beings to suspect he may have taped a telephone conversation that alludes to more than a simple affair going on and his intuition deepens his concern when an assistant in his client's office waylays him and tries to secure the tapes from him.

Harry stands his ground that he has to deliver his findings to his client in person and this leaves him in a quandary about whether to investigate further or not.

THE CONVERSATION was directed, produced and written by Francis Ford Coppola.
