Synopsis

Adapted from Monica Ali's award-winning, best-selling novel of the same name, BRICK LANE is the story of a beautiful young 17 year-old Bangladeshi woman, Nazneen (Tannishta Chatterjee), who arrives in 1980's London from her Bangladeshi village home, where she leaves behind her beloved sister, for an arranged marriage and a new life.

Within the four walls of her flat in East London and in a loveless marriage to the middle aged Chanu Ahmed (Satish Kaushik), Nazneen struggles to accept her lot, but she is soon forced to confront life the day that a hot headed, young, local man, Karim (Christopher Simpson), comes knocking at the door. Against a background of escalating racial tension, they embark on an affair that finally forces Nazneen to take control of her life.

A truly contemporary story of love, of cultural difference, and ultimately, the strength of the human spirit, BRICK LANE was a Winner of the London Film Festival's UK New Film Talent Award for debuting director Sarah Gavron.
