Synopsis
Set in the near future, THE BOOK OF ELI reveals a lawless and desolate America. Cities are disintegrating death traps and violent gangs patrol the highways. Armed with only a shotgun, a samurai sword and his wits, Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on the move for years, defending himself from the marauding gangs and scavengers fighting over the dwindling resources.
Arriving in a dilapidated outpost located within what used to be California, Eli finds trouble with an egotistical tyrant, Carnegie (Gary Oldman), who rules over his town and his people with an iron fist. Eli befriends the beautiful Solara (Mila Kunis), Carnegie's stepdaughter, and discovers Carnegie intends to take control of the region using fear and violence.
Eli manages to escape, but Solara follows him. He rejects her, so she begins to retrace her steps back to her hometown. Fortunately Eli has a change of heart and goes back for Solara, rescuing her from a band of vicious thugs. However, Carnegie is in hot pursuit, as Eli traverses the dangerous wastelands, heading for the shattered ruins of San Francisco. In a climactic showdown with Carnegie and his men, Eli finally understands his destiny: to deliver the knowledge that can offer mankind hope, bring civilization back from the brink of destruction and save the future of humanity.
