Synopsis

Adapted from Martin Booth's 1990 novel A Very Private Gentleman, THE AMERICAN stars George Clooney as Jack, a lone assassin, constantly moving from place to place wherever the next job takes him. When an assignment in Sweden doesn't end well, Jack retreats to the Italian countryside for a much needed break from death. While staying in a small mediaeval town of Abruzzo, Jack accepts a contract to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten).

Soaking up the peace of the mountain scenery, Jack is befriended by a local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and meets a beautiful woman, Clara (Violante Placido). Jack and Clara's romantic liaison is one seemingly free of danger, but by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate
