Synopsis

Shot in black and white, ALICE IN THE CITIES finds a German journalist, Philip Winter (Rudiger Vogler), at an American airport trying to return home as he's suffering from writer's block and can't find any inspiration in New York. There he meets up with a German mother (Elisabeth Kreuzer) and her 9 year-old daughter, Alice (Yella Rottländer) doing likewise, but they will all have to wait until there's a flight available to Europe.

Winter obliging agrees to look after Alice for a while when her mother asks him, but when she misses the flight and never shows up at Amsterdam, Winter is suddenly left with the responsibility of a young girl on his hands. Thrust into this unforeseen circumstance, Winter is galvanized into action as he and Alice drive home to Germany aiming for Dusseldorf where Alice's grandmother resides and to start their search there.
