Synopsis
Director Jieho Lee divides this vast tale into four threads, a timid businessman (Forest Whitaker) bets his life on a horse race after he discovers the fix is in, a fragile pop star (Sarah Michelle Gellar) finds her management contract unexpectedly in jeopardy; a gangster (Brendan Fraser) who sees the future must decide whether or not to follow his visions, and a doctor (Bacon) tries to save the love of his life from a deadly injury.
All inextricably linked to ruthless crime boss Fingers (Andy Garcia), these characters weave together and as the story unfolds through a mystifying and interwoven set of coincidences, an ancient Chinese proverb links these four extremely different characters' lives which symbolise the emotional cornerstones of life: happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love.
Happiness - When a timid businessman (Whittaker; The Last King of Scotland) overhears a sure bet at a horse race he risks it all with dire consequences.
Pleasure - Fragile popstar (Gellar; Cruel Intentions) discovers her management contract is in jeopardy when her manager trades her against his outstanding debts.
Sorrow - A gang member (Fraser; Crash), who has the ability to see into the future, finds himself embroiled in a gangster lifestyle after losing his brother in a street fight.
Love - A heartbroken doctor (Bacon; Mystic River) fights for the life of his love (Delpy; Before Sunset) when she is poisoned by a snakebite.
